In February 2013 my sons and I started doing crossfit together at my friend’s box. I went from a size 16/18 to a size 10 in less than a year and was in the best shape of my life. On 11/20/14, at the age of 46, I was diagnosed with stage 3B NSCLC. Just a week and a half after my 46 birthday, I was facing death. It started with wheezing and then turned into a horrible cough, I was diagnosed with asthma but none of the asthma medication was working. On 11/17/14, I went to the ER, and after the CT scan, they admitted me but didn’t tell me they saw something. That evening, my pulmonary specialist told me what they saw and stated that they needed to do a bronchoscopy. The next day they did a bronchoscopy and two days later I received the worse news of my life.
I couldn’t understand why I had gotten lung cancer because I was in the best shape of my life, eating healthy, doing crossfit, lifting heavy weights and I had never smoked. I started chemo and radiation, and six weeks after my diagnoses, I found out I was ALK-positive. After chemo and radiation, I started on targeted therapy pills. I was told I only had about 18 months to live, but you see, I serve an almighty God, and through my faith, my trust and by believing his word 100%, I am here today! I thought I wouldn’t see my children grow or even meet my grandchildren, but God had other plans for me. I got to see my children graduate high school and college. I’m also now a grandmother. I got to meet my first grand-daughter, Leyana Julia! I went on to open up my very own crossfit (Region Rat CrossFit), and I’ve been in business for two years now.
I enjoy life. I live the moment. I take nothing for granted, and I’m a very active lung cancer advocate! Not only do I have my crossfit, but I also sell Advocare products. I just signed up to sell Paparazzi jewelry. You see, I’m NOT letting lung cancer control me; I’m controlling lung cancer, and it will NOT take me away from my husband, my children, my granddaughter, my business and my members.
I’ve combined my faith with science, and I’m here today, strong as ever! Life and death lies in the power of our tongue so SPEAK LIFE!
